The Phoenix Brief - 1 April 2024

Easter delivering the goodies; 6 points!

The Phoenix Women’s season is over with a record points score even if they didn’t make the play-offs, but there is a simply massive last 4 games coming up for the Phoenix Men, including away at Central Coast (#2 on the table) on Saturday 6th April at 7.30pm NZ, and two night games in Wellington on Friday 19th April at 7pm, and Saturday 27th April at 7.15pm (time now confirmed). Come on you Nix, let’s get that first every trophy!!

The Weekend Past

The Phoenix Men played Brisbane Roar at Sky Stadium and leave with an important three points. The goal came in the first two minutes without Brisbane managing to play a single pass. Instead all 10 Nix outfield players played the ball in the lead up. The men will be without Captain Alex Rufer for next weeks clash against Central Coast after receiving a controversial red card late in the game.

The win cements the Phoenix Men at the top of the league for another week, 6 points clear, but with Central Coast still having a game in hand. It’s a tough run in for the Nix, with three of the last four games against teams in the top six. We wait to see how long Rufer’s suspension will be and how Coach Italiano will manage the disruption.

The Phoenix Women played their last game of the season versus Western Sydney in Sweet Home Porirua and arguably played some of their best football all season. Emma Main, or “the Main Train” as the fans call her, scored the brace that meant Western Sydneys chances of making the Top 6, was completely out of their control.

It’s a bittersweet end of the season for the Wahinix. Their best season to date with their most ever wins. But struggling to take points when not playing at Sweet Home Porirua was the downfall, and something Coach Temple will hope to build from in the coming season. The finals series kicks off on the 13th of April.
