The Phoenix Brief - 18th Mar 2024

All to play for

Hi, I’m Hayden, long-term Yellow Fever member and putting out this Phoenix Brief as Ralph is at WOMAD.
Special note: this coming week there’s a women’s game on Weds 20th March 5pm at Sweet Home Porirua - rally behind the women, as every game now is like a final…

The Weekend Past

The Phoenix Men said farewell to Auckland’s Eden Park as the ‘home’ team in style. A clinical 2-1 win over ex Phoenix coach, Ufuk Talay’s Sydney FC see’s the Nix go back on top. Worrying signs as two Nix defenders (Payne and Hughes) were taken off with hamstring injuries - hopefully the international window allows enough time to fully heal.

The men retain their spot at top of the table going into the international break. Central Coast have a game in hand after not playing this weekend due to an AFC Cup semi-final against former Nix striker, Krishna’s new club.

Also:

After almost 2 months away from home, the Phoenix Women didn’t have the homecoming they would have wanted. Socceroos star Cortnee Vine dictated the proceedings for the visitors with 2 goals and an assist, seeing away the Wahinix, in desperate need of the win, by 4 goals to 2.

With only 3 games left, and a total of 9 points up for grabs, mathematically the Phoenix Women could still make the top 6, but their hopes are hanging on by a thread.
