The Phoenix Brief – 16 December 2024

Marco! Paulo!

A turbulent weekend of mixed results, the Phoenix Women sneaking a point, and the Phoenix Men hamstrung by former Phoenix shotstopper, Filip Kurto. On a bright note, Marco Rojas started for the Nix for the first time in over 5,000 days.

The Weekend Past

The Phoenix Men…

Showed glimpses of promise, and the link-up play between Rojas and Barbarouses was one of few highlights. Defender Isaac Hughes has had a rough fortnight, conceding an own-goal last week, and giving away an early penalty this week. A frustrating game for the men, chasing the game, and Kurto making some fantastic reactionary saves to keep the Bulls alive. 2-1 loss.

The Phoenix Women…

With what can only be described as a robbery, stole a point against Melbourne Victory to extend their unbeaten run to three. It was the young teenager, Manaia Elliott, as a late substitute that powered home a pinpoint cross from Emma Main. To put this in context, this is the first point the women have scored in Victoria State, ever.
