The Phoenix Brief – 27th January 2025

big moments, not capitalised

The Central Coast double header weekend saw the Nix take 1 point from a possible 6. The Men returned to Christchurch for the first time in 9 years, and the Women hoped to beat the mariners for this first time in their history.

The Weekend Past

The Phoenix Men…

Played out a stalemate in Christchurch in front of a bumper crowd. While the Phoenix continue to miss the spark in the final third, controversy surrounded 2 penalty decisions that were overlooked by VAR. Special mentions to some of the raw talent coming through, with the likes of Walker, Conchie and A. Kelly-Heald bringing sparks of joy and promise to the future of the club.

The Men don’t play again until Waitangi Day, and are hoping to have 1-2 signings made before then.

The Phoenix Women…

Looked as if they might play out a similar result to the men, with the contest holding on at 0-0. However it was a “moment of magic” that made the difference, with 16-year old Tiana Fuller trying her luck from distance, beating Phoenix keeper in some style. Early chances not capitilised have come back to haunt the Nix.

Both teams are needing to pick up as many points as possible in the coming games to keep the hopes of playoffs alive. Easier said than done.
